"Not 'alf!"

I wouldn’t give Rupert Murdoch the pickings of my nose, so it somewhat grieves me to mention his rag for the Neanderthals the super soar away Scum, but how could I ignore a headline like” Ale is making a comeback as lager sales dip”.

The article appears to be referring to off-sales, so not really real ale related, but the good news does seem to continue on the ale front. They print a ‘Top 20 Beers’ chart. Only four out of that twenty are ale. Old Speckled Hen scrapes in at that all important anchor spot of Nº 20. According to the article:

“Lager dominates home sales partly because it is easier to transfer the taste of a pint in a pub to a can. But new technology has helped preserve the flavour of brewed bitter much better than before helping to boost sales of pub ales like Old Speckled Hen and Spitfire Ale.”
I’m not sure what new technology they are referring to. Could it be some breakthrough packaging innovation (which I probably should know about) or could it be this new fangled CO²?

Even though the top selling ale is the moribund John Smith’s Extra Smooth it’s good that a positive message about ale is going out to so many people.

They are just the beer equivalent of the most popular telly programmes, pop groups or newspapers!
Popular = LCD

Real Ale Blog

Beer is good! Whilst here at RealAleBlog we love all beer (well perhaps not that Euro-fizz nonsense) we get particularly horny about the live kind. No beer necrophilia for us. Hence we write solely about cask ale, real ale in a bottle and the whole business that supports its distribution and sale. We don’t always feel moved, nor have the time, to post every single day, as we do have a life. I say ‘we’ although it’s mainly me, Paul Garrard, but from time to time guest writers turn up. I have no pretentions about being a beer writer, I blog because I enjoy it. I’ve been blogging since 2003 and blogging about beer since the beginning of 2005, but not on this site. I don’t consider myself a beer anorak; I just bang on about it a lot. I’m happy to share a drink with any readers/bloggers that happen to be in the right place at the right time. You can email me on: paul (the @ symbol) realaleblog (dot.) co (dot.) uk. Cheers!
